Bayside United Victory

Bayside United began the 2010 season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Division Two rivals Oxley in the first round of the Canale Cup at home on Saturday night.  There were debuts for new signings Nic Dezenzo, Graham Horgan, Mo Gamble, Peter Gatt and Blair McLean whilst newcomers Pablo Palaez, Dan Khoury and Ryan Patten were also on the bench in a new look Bayside outfit.  21 Year old Lee Morrice was named  club Captain prior to the match.

Bayside began the match well, controlling possession and passing the ball with confidence, however chances were hard to come by as Oxley defended resolutely.  Eventually the dominance in possession told though as some excellent skill and a pinpoint cross out wide from Peter Gatt found midfielder Jack Davison who made it 1-0 with a tap in from 5 yards.  Bayside continued to dominate the match however they were unable to add more goals and went in at half time with a slender 1 goal lead.

The second half saw Oxley come out looking sharper and some free kicks in dangerous position put the Bayside defence under pressure for the first time in the match, however goalkeeper Cameron Davey dealt comfortably with anything that came his way and slowly Bayside once again started to get on top.  A substitution on 65 minutes seemed to give Bayside some impetus as Pablo Palaez entered the fray for his first Bayside appearance and shortly afterwards he made the score line more comfortable with a clinical finish after some good counter attacking play from Ben Webb and Peter Gatt.

Daniel Khoury and Ryan Patten also came on as substitutions and made good contributions with Patten setting up Palaez for his second of the evening to make it 3-0 and Khoury unlucky not to get on the scoresheet as well with a rasping 30 yarder that hit the crossbar.  A good first up performance from Bayside which will see them continue into the second round of the Canale Cup this weekend against Kangaroo Point Rovers.  Bayside United’s Reserve side beat Oxley 5-0 in the early match.
